McGaw YMCA

OVERVIEW /

The McGaw YMCA is a longstanding historic building in Evanston and has served the community for over 134 years. The building and branding have evolved, including a YMCA national rebrand. While some signage was updated, there was a greater opportunity to improve wayfinding and create a more welcoming, immersive environment.

A key challenge was outdated and insufficient wayfinding, as member feedback indicated the building was difficult to navigate. The goal was to design a system that was clear, accessible, and uniquely reflective of the McGaw YMCA.

The first phase of this project resulted in a more intuitive and inviting space for both members and staff. A color-coded floor system improved navigation, while abstract photography on doors added a secondary layer of directional signage. This cohesive system is integrated throughout the building, from wayfinding and door signage to branding elements like the Evanston-specific word cloud in the main hallway and the custom lobby map.
